My Funai Blue Ray Player Has Sound on the Previews but Not the Movie

,,
  1. I just purchased my first Blue Ray DVD player (panasonic bd-605) and hooked it up to my Harman Kardon AVR 55 via the optical cable for surround sound. This has worked fine for every other dvd player I've owned, however now when I insert a disc the previews, title pages, etc all play in dolby digital 5.1 (AC3) and sound great. The problem is when the actual movie starts there is no sound at all. I dont know why it would work on previews etc and not produce any sound when the feature starts. I spent 45+ minutes with panasonics' tech folks changing settings from pcm to bitstream and other things but it did not help. I exchanged the unit and hooked a new up one today and I have the same issues so it's not likely the DVD player. Any thoughts on where I might look to figure this out.

    Many thanks in advance,

    S

  2. Hahahaha............ Blue Ray...... Yeah, I don't like it. Can you tell? Sony went ALL out to foist this DRM HORROR on the public.

I am sorry.... don't take it personal. Anyway, a lot of titles will only work through an HDMI port. Some are setting related. Often, the player itself will require a firmware update as well. It'll likely be one of the above. Sadly, Blue Ray is still riddled with issues.

I sincerely hope you get it resolved. You did try a different title? Like I said, a lot of stuff is also locked out, or sometimes the components just do not get along.

Ok, this also happened with HD-DVD, but not NEARLY as much.

Lastly, try the setup menu in the movie itself for other audio options.

Yeah, it CAN be a pain.

  3. I recently had to update the firmware on my Blue Ray player due to the minor irritation of it not being able to play movies anymore. So, I updated and it was good to go. We watched one movie and now It wont even put out a signal, Raft anchor!
  4. Ensure that you have gone into the "TV/Device Connection" > "HDMI Connection" menu and set HDMI audio output to "Off".

If that doesn't fix it post back and we'll see what else there might be.

    x_25 Big Vandies!! Mwahahah...

Goodness. If stuff like this is common for trying to run BlueRay without HDMI (our receiver isn't HDMI or HDCP being from 2002 or so) I am just not going to buy one.

  6. Geezus man, don't get your undies in a bunch over a simple setting or two.

I don't have an HDMI receiver and I got my Panasonic Blu-ray player working first time out. They come default expectin you will be connecting HDMI, so normally you just have to change a setting or two.

  7. Thanks for the input. The first thing I did out of the box was download the lastest firmware version (2.2) to the player. Actually some of the discs I tried work fine. Star Trek and Harry Potter work fine all the way through, however Transformers, Julie and Julia (for the little woman), and Reservior Dogs have the problem of no sound during feature playback. I even added a 2 gig sd card to the player in case the dvd needed a bit more space to do it's stuff. I have an HDMI hook up between the tv and dvd player and an optical hook up between the dvd player and receiver. I did turn the HDMI setting off in the menu but that just stopped audio from playing through the tv and had no effect on the stereo. I'll take any last suggestions before I return this player and wait another year for the technology to work out the bugs.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  8. When you are playing these certain movies that don't have the audio, what is the audio track you are selecting for playback on the disk?

As someone else mentioned, there are often multiple audio formats available and perhaps these certain discs are defaulting to a mode that doesn't provide output to your player. I know that sounds odd because you are getting trailers/preview audio, but the trailers/previews seldom use the higher-end audio formats. You'd want to select the basic Dolby Digital or DTS audio tracks, not any of the high res ones. Sometimes these choices are in the "Language" or "Setup" options on the disc's menu screen.

Also, have you tried both the "On" and "Off" settings for "BD Secondary Audio" to see if that takes care of it?

  9. Mayleman,
Try the Component connection to your AV receiver.

I use the same Blu-Ray player into a non-HDMI TV.I am able to get 1080i into my TV(on Blu-Ray discs) via Component.
